Julie Scott
Julie is a fifth-year, Intercultural Studies PhD student at Fuller’s Center for Missiological Research. There she studies Christian evangelism practices in Thailand among Thai Buddhists, and cognitive psychological studies on intuition in evangelism.
Julie lived in Beijing, China for a semester in 2006, studying Chinese Christianity, culture, and Mandarin. After college, she moved to Daegu, South Korea, and lived there from 2009 to 2010, where she studied Korean Christianity and taught English. She returned to China in 2010, and lived in Tianjin for three years, studying Chinese Christianity and Mandarin while also teaching English and serving as worship leader at Tianjin International Christian Fellowship. From 2014 to 2015, she worked as the Missions Coordinator for Fuller Seminary’s Presbyterian Ministries. She then served as the intercultural ministries and family ministries intern for San Marino Community Church in San Marino, CA, from 2016 to 2017.
Starting in 2015, Julie has conducted research and written memoirs of the China Connection Mission Agency and its director, Kathy Call. Call’s work in China is significant for being one of the only international missions allowed to do charitable work and preach sermons in China in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and early 21st century.
Beginning in 2023, Julie has served as Fuller Seminary’s administrator-in-training for the 2023 Missiological Lectures, titled “Evangelism Next: Evangelism in a Post-Christendom Era.” She administered the annual lecture series about evangelism with over 55 presenters at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA, while also working as TA for the Fuller course corresponding with the lectures. Now, she is editing the book to be published out of it.
As a Paraclete associate, she will research evangelism in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Her special focus will be the intuitions involved in Thai evangelism practices among Thai Buddhists. She proposes to answer the question: “Which intuitions do Thai Buddhists and Thai Christians from Buddhist backgrounds hold of their evangelism experiences with Thai Christians?” She will compile this data to complete her PhD dissertation, which will inform her teaching as a missions professor at a Thai or international seminary.
She and Matt love playing all kinds of board games and host the Fuller Board Gamers. She enjoys making jewelry, painting, hiking, snorkeling, and making homemade ice cream. They have an 8-year-old cat named Nushi, who runs their house as the most spoiled cat in the universe! Matt and Nushi will move with, and support, Julie while she conducts her research in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
