Believing that “the place God calls you to is where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet (Frederick Buechner, 1993),” Jacinda counts it a privilege to work with a talented team of national teachers to provide discipleship-based education to the future leaders of Papua, Indonesia. As she serves in areas of counseling and administration, she gets a front-row seat to see how hope is growing in her corner of the world! Jacinda is a third generation missionary kid. Born and raised in Indonesia, she loved the sense of adventure and purpose that she experienced growing up. She is grateful for the way her parents taught her about the Bible and modeled what it looks like to serve God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. She realized her need for God and began pursuing a relationship with Christ when she was seven years old. After graduating from high school in Indonesia, she went to Bible School with Youth With A Mission in Hawaii and South Asia. During this time, she continued to grow in her faith as she faced the pain, brokenness, and poverty in the world around her. After Bible School, Jacinda graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a B.A. in Theatre and Theology as well as a certification in Elementary Education. She then went on to get her M.A in Counseling from Nyack College, Alliance Theological Seminary. Matt grew up in Idaho and went to college in Seattle where he received a B.S. in engineering with a global and urban ministries minor, and a music minor. After working a few years in the semiconductor industry he completed a masters, doctorate, and post-doc in earth and environmental engineering at Columbia University in New York City, carrying out a variety of field research and technology development projects across both east and west Africa in the areas of biofuels, solar power, and water management for remote, resource limited communities. After grad-school Matt co-founded and lead an engineering firm that grew into a solar-PV off-grid electric company in South East Asia. He currently directs Papua Hope Language Institute in Papua Indonesia. Matt and Jacinda met during their undergraduate years at Seattle Pacific University. They fell in love amidst the cubicles of the Office of Campus Ministries (Matt was the chapel worship leader and Jacinda lead the short-term mission program). In 2003 they got married. They worked in Seattle for two years before moving to New York City to pursue their graduate degrees. In 2012, the Basinger’s moved to Papua, Indonesia with their two young sons, Zephaniah and Ezra.
